The Adrenal Gland, A Stress Hormone

Stress is often a challenge. Whenever you experience stress the reaction in your body is to fight it. This reaction causes the secretion of adrenal gland hormones. The adrenal glands are the stress gland of the body. These glands, designed to prepare the body for temporary emergency, can become exhausted and over reactive.

This is how stress is processed through your body:

Adrenaline makes your blood flow towards your muscles, heart and brain away from the skin and digestive track. Then, your heart beats rapidly and forcefully increasing heart rate and blood pressure. When this happens, your eyes dilate and your blood vessels constrict. Finally, the sugar stored in your liver is converted to glucose (blood sugar) for quick energy; all this to help you fight it.

Your hormone rhythm helps you sleep based on the level of the adrenal hormone. If your adrenal is exhausted during the day, it may try to recycle at night when you try to fall asleep. The result: INSOMNIA, too much adrenaline at the wrong time!

When the body is under stress the immune system is suppressed. Research by the National Institute for Health found that persons under stress are more susceptible to bacteria and viruses.

The glands secrete DHEA, which is used to create the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone reserves in the body. Because of this, when long term stress causes problems with these glands, it can lead to PMS, menopausal symptoms and hormonal imbalances. As women age, their ovarian function declines and the ovaries in turn may rob the adrenals and thyroid glands, leading to hypothyroidism, weight gain and fatigue.

Tips to help out your glands function: Lifestyle is an important factor.
– Avoide caffeine, soda, sugar all of which force the adrenal glands to work overtime.
– Eating and drinking in moderation
– Getting enough sleep

At the Zoll Center, we have found that using nutritional supplements and homeopathic medicines can restore normal adrenal function thereby restoring energy and vitality.
